Follow These Tips for Small Rooms and They Will Appear Larger

Sometimes you have to make do with a small space, but that doesn’t mean you can’t incorporate a few tricks to make it look larger. From installing custom window coverings to something as simple as picking up clutter, any room can look larger with a bit of imagination and willingness.

Pay Attention to Colors and Contrast

Choosing light-colored paint for the walls and custom drapes can make any room look bigger. Since bright colors are more reflective, the room looks airier and more open because it contains more natural light. Dark colors do just the opposite because they absorb light and make a space look smaller. Choosing soft tones that contrast well with each other will not only give the room a polished look, but it will also downplay its small square footage.

Choose Multi-Purpose or Collapsible Furniture

It is unavoidable that furniture takes up more space in a room than anything else. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t get creative with your furniture purchases and placement. Your bed, for example, could have drawers underneath it. If you live alone or with just one other person, there’s no reason a kitchen table must take up most of that room. Remember that you can always buy a kitchen table with a leaf in the center to make it larger when guests dine with you.

Create a Focal Point in the Room

Some people overcompensate for a small room by placing too many pictures on the wall or trying to have too much furniture or knickknacks. When you have limited space, consider making one area of the room a focal point that draws your attention the most. The bed in your bedroom and a couch in the living room are just two examples. Take a minimalist approach to decorating the room and arrange the furniture in such a way that it highlights the room’s focal point.

Mirrors Give the Illusion of More Space

Angling a mirror towards a room’s focal point helps to give it more depth. Mirrors also help to bring more natural and artificial light into a room, and the brightness makes the room seem larger. A mirror by living room curtains aiming towards the rest of the room is just one idea to consider here.
